No, not really. Shinigami maintain the flow of life, yes, but sometimes there is more for someone to do than what the gods planned for. I like to think people can shape their own fate. Why else would they have free will? Hm!

My objective as a shinigami is to protect life from the dangers beyond people's control. The Earl would be one of those dangers.
